It's official, I am now in love with Mombasa! After two trips to the pearl of the Indian Ocean, I cannot get enough of arguably the most beautiful city on the planet. From the crowded and hectic island, the very heart of Mombasa, to the calm and relaxation of the beach neighbourhoods to the north, such as Nyali and Shanzu, to the many resorts of Diani Beach to the south, one of the best beaches in the world, Mombasa has a lot to see and do.
Mombasa is nestled between two rivers, the Tudor Creek to the east and the "Kilindini Harbour", which separates Mombasa Island from mainland Kenya. Mombasa is the capital of the Coast Province, the second most populous province in Kenya. Mombasa is split into 4 main areas. Mombasa Island is the heart of the city, with the lion's share of the population. To the north, across the New Nyali Bridge is the Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu neighbourhoods, known as the North Coast. Many of the city's resorts and hotels are found along the long, sandy beaches in the North Coast. To the south of Mombasa Island is Likoni and Diani, or the South Coast. Although Likoni is largely poor, Diani is home to world-class resorts. Finally, to the west, the Changamwe Oil Refineries and Moi International Airport can be found.
If you really enjoy good food, luxurious hotels, friendly people, relaxing on the beach, or walking through the hustle-bustle of downtown, Mombasa has it all. So seriously, why aren't you in Mombasa right now?
